| by James Fenimore CooperThe Eclipse by James Fenimore Cooper is a very enjoyable recollection of his experience of the total eclipse of the sun in June, 1806. He had recently been expelled from Yale College in New Haven, Connecticut, for being involved in a prank where he apparently blew up another student door. It is thought that Cooper wrote this story around 1831 for publication in an annual. It was somehow misplaced among his other papers and writings, and never sent to the editor of the annual. It was lost until after his death in 1851, and was eventually published in Putnam Monthly magazine in 1869.The story took place in Cooper hometown on Lake Otsego, located at the start of the Susquehanna River. The town, Cooperstown, NY was founded by his father. In the course of the story, he describes Adidas Jeremy Scott Leopard the http://www.porschedesignbounces2.com/ excitement of the townspeople the night before the eclipse is to take place. He describes his hometown and the surrounding area with obvious love and includes small details which make the reader feel that they could actually almost Adidas Jeremy Scott Bones see it. It is clear from this story that he was very fond of his hometown.Cooper description of the day gives a glimpse into some details of the town life at that time. He writes of his trepidations about the eclipse, how it seemed to him an ill omen. He describes how up until the eclipse, life for many townspeople continued on as usual blacksmith and the carpenter continued their duties, as did many a housewife once the eclipse was in full swing the entire town came to a standstill while people watched the sun disappear, and waited for its return. If you Adidas Jeremy Scott enjoy descriptive essays or historical pieces, this is an excellent work to include in your read list. The places he describes come to life in his writing. He takes a brief, if momentous, event and uses it to explore what his home was like at that time, giving the reader some real insight into the character of the town and some of Cooper own character.Although it is easy to get lost in some of Cooper longer works, and bogged down by the very descriptiveness that makes this story so memorable, this short story has long been a favorite and should be more widely read. It is a wonderful example of both descriptive writing and of memoir writing. | |
